Pacheco’s Surgery

Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco underwent a successful surgery yesterday to repair his fractured fibula.

There were no complications and no ligament issues, which is positive news.

Pacheco will be out for a minimum of six weeks and possibly up to eight weeks.

If Pacheco returns after six weeks, his first game back could be the Chiefs’ Week 9 Monday night game against the Buccaneers on November 4th.

From the Podium

Coach Reid

  • On Pacheco: “He’s been put on IR. He’s having surgery today. I can’t give you a timetable on when he will return.”

  • On Kareem Hunt’s status: “We’ll get him in here and get some work. Get him back in the swing of playing. And we’ll just see. We’ll try to get him ready to play, whether that is this week, next week, or the following week… There’s a chance [he could play in Atlanta].”

  • On the decision to re-sign Hunt: “We thought he needed a change of scenery and to get some help. We felt like he did that. He did a nice job in Cleveland. We talked to the people there, and there were no issues there. We felt okay about bringing him back… He’s 29 years old. It looks like he’s grown up some… Pat stayed good friends with him… I think people deserve a second chance if they’ve done something with the first part of it.”

  • On National Cheeseburger Day: "[Pat] McAfee just sent me a cheeseburger from McDonald's. I thought that was unique. McAfee's unique. But, I can't wait to enjoy it."

Patrick Mahomes

  • On Kareem Hunt: “Obviously Kareem was a close friend of mine while he was here… He went to Cleveland and had a good career there. He’s learned and become a better person, and I’m glad to have him back now.”

  • On Hunt’s character: “I just root for the person. The football is secondary, but I’m glad to have him back. Everybody has friends that make mistakes… You want to see them take the right steps to become a better person. He’s been able to be a better person.”

  • What Hunt brings: “A guy that plays hard, plays physical, [and] can catch the ball out of the backfield. He still has explosion in between the tackles.”

  • On the LT spot: “I don’t make [the decision on who starts] at the end of the day. I have a lot of trust in both of those guys.” Mahomes noted that he trusts the coaches to make the best decision for the team.

  • On Pacheco’s energy: “The energy that he brings, the way he runs the football, the way he pops up, that’s going to take other guys to step up with.”

  • On playing the Falcons: “We’re going to have to sharpen up our stuff offensively.”

  • On the rise of short passes: “I think this last week in general, I didn’t play to my standard, so I have to be better… Whenever teams take away the deep stuff, you have to be able to throw it underneath... I think across the league, teams are just going to make you drive the entire field and not let you score in the red zone.”

Trent McDuffie

  • On his play: “I think I’m doing my job [well]… Kind of still getting comfortable out there at the corner position.”

  • On the drives in the 4th quarter: “When you get to that fourth quarter, that’s when you win games… Really just focusing on being at your best in the fourth quarter is something we’ve done a great job of.”

  • On TEs having success against the defense: “It’s a little bit… how our scheme has matched up. We trust J-Reid out there and all our linebackers.”

  • On Jaylen Watson: “I love that man… He’s one of those dudes that’s continued to get better and better… He’s one of those guys that just loves the game.”

  • On Chris Jones: “Teams always look at him… They’ll always try to get two guys on him. He’s a factor, run game or pass game. It leaves a lot of openings for other guys to make plays.”

  • On Chamarri Conner: “It’s not easy [to play nickel]… He’s one of those guys that just keeps stacking days… He’s just continued to ask the right questions… He’s 100% whenever he’s on the field…. He’s always around the ball and always making plays.”

Luke’s Take

Forgiveness and second chances are a powerful thing.

I don’t think Hunt make the mistake of being dishonest with the organization again, so I don’t see much risk with the signing.

Football-wise, I’m not sure that Hunt has much left in the tank based on his declining numbers over the last few seasons, but I’m glad they added some veteran depth at the position.

Sam McDowell of the KC Star went in-depth on Hunt’s declining numbers in a segment on Sports Radio 810 WHB on Tuesday.
