Key Moments and Storylines

The 2024 Chiefs season was filled with some ups and downs.

We’ll quickly highlight key moments and storylines from another memorable season.

  • The Chiefs reported to training camp as back-to-back Super Bowl champions, with their sights set on doing something no other team in the Super Bowl era has done: win three consecutive Super Bowls

  • On the first offensive play of the preseason, WR Hollywood Brown suffered a shoulder injury that sidelined him until late in the season

  • The Chiefs began the season starting rookie Kingsley Suamataia at LT, but he was exposed starting in Week 2. Then, the Chiefs gave backup Wanya Morris an opportunity until Joe Thuney took over as LT in Week 15

  • In Week 2 against the Bengals, Isiah Pacheco suffered a fractured fibula late in the game, which required surgery. This led to the Chiefs signing Kareem Hunt a couple of weeks later. Pacheco didn’t return until Week 13 against the Raiders

  • In Week 4 against the Chargers, the Chiefs lost their leading WR, Rashee Rice, for the season with an LCL injury that required surgery. Rice sustained the injury when he collided with Mahomes after Mahomes threw an interception and was attempting to tackle the defender

  • The Chiefs started the season 9-0, seven of the wins coming in one-score games, before losing their first game to the Bills on the road in Week 11

  • The Chiefs clinched their 9th straight AFC West title in their 19-17 win over the Chargers in Week 14

  • The Chiefs clinched the #1 seed in the AFC and home-field advantage in their Christmas Day win over the Steelers

  • The Chiefs dispatched the Texans in the Divisional Round, then won a nail-biter against the Bills to advance to their third straight Super Bowl

  • The Chiefs were dominated by the Eagles 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX

Luke’s Take

I neglected to add the option that the Chiefs could draft a LT with their current draft pick(s).

To secure the position, the Chiefs would likely need to make an aggressive trade-up in the first round of the draft or trade for a LT.

Singing an above-average free-agent LT would be really expensive.

With the amount the Chiefs are paying Mahomes, some of their other key players, and the players that will be up for contract negotiations in the next one or two seasons, I’d be surprised if the Chiefs went out and spent a lot of money on a LT in free agency.

I could see them using draft picks to trade up in the draft to take a player they believe in or just drafting a tackle (or two) with the picks they already have in the draft.
