Kansas Passes STAR Bond Bill

On Tuesday, the Kansas Legislature passed a bill aimed at attracting the Chiefs and Royals to the state.

The bill, which allows STAR Bonds to finance up to 70% of the cost of building stadiums for professional sports teams, passed the House by a vote of 84-38 and the Senate by a vote of 27-8.

The bipartisan bill passed through the Kansas legislature in just a single day.

Previously, STAR Bonds were only allowed to finance 50% of the cost of a project in the state of Kansas.

The bill would be the key financing component for the Chiefs and Royals if they were to build stadiums in Kansas, which are estimated at $2 billion (Chiefs) and $1.5 billion (Royals).

The STAR Bonds would be paid back over 30 years from the sales tax generated by the stadiums and surrounding developments, sports gambling revenue, and lottery revenue.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is expected to sign the bill into law.

In April, Jackson County voters struck down an extension of the 3/8-cent sales tax, which opened the door for Kansas to attempt to lure the Chiefs and Royals across the state line.

After the vote passed in Kansas, the Chiefs issued the following statement:

“We support their efforts to expand the existing program and congratulate them on passing the legislation in special session. We look forward to exploring the options this legislation may provide.”

Governor Kelly said the following:

“The bipartisan effort to invite the Chiefs and Royals to Kansas shows we’re all-in on keeping our beloved teams in the Kansas City metro. Kansas now has the opportunity to become a professional sports powerhouse with the Chiefs and Royals potentially joining Sporting KC as major league attractions, all with robust, revenue-generating entertainment districts surrounding them providing new jobs, new visitors, and new revenues that boost the Kansas economy.”

Isaiah Buggs Arrest Details

Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs was arrested on Sunday morning in Alabama on a domestic violence/burglary charge.

Buggs’ bond was set at $5,000, which the judge revoked due to the recent charges of animal cruelty that were brought against Buggs.

The most recent incident allegedly involved Buggs’ former girlfriend.

Buggs is being accused of dragging his ex-girlfriend, and the mother of his child, down a set of stairs and injuring her.

The alleged victim reported to police that Buggs broke into her home with a tire iron around 5:28 a.m. on Sunday.

Buggs is also facing other allegations of shoving the Tuscaloosa Police Chief and pointing a handgun at a patron of the Hookah Lounge he owns.
