Chiefs News

The Latest

From the Podium

Andy Reid

  • On DeAndre Hopkins’ lack of catches against Houston: “That’s the way it worked out. We want to use all of them, they’re all good players. There’s only one ball.”

  • On defending the Bills on 3rd down: “They do a good job offensively on 3rd down… Their offense is very good in general… It’s a big challenge. You’ve got the flexibility of the QB being able to throw and run… It’s a strong offense.”

  • On Xavier Worthy: “He’s gotten better every week… He’s more familiar with the offense and what Pat expects from him… The main thing is, he’s wired the way where he wants to be good. That’s a big part of it… He doesn’t let his ego get in the way.”

  • On Kareem Hunt in short yardage: Coach Reid praised Hunt’s ability to find small holes and hit them with power in short-yardage situations.

  • On Mecole Hardman’s injury: Coach Reid noted that Hardman will be placed on IR, which will end his season.

Patrick Mahomes

  • On the rivalry with the Bills: “It’s two really good football teams going up against each other… We’ve been able to beat them in the playoffs, and they’ve got us in the regular season, but if you look at the games, all of them have been close… We know it’s going to take our best in order to find a way to get a win.”

  • On facing Josh Allen: “I’ve played Josh enough to know he’s going to come out there and play great football… For me, I have to play my best football whenever I get the opportunity and put our team in the best situation to succeed… When you go up against a great QB, it takes your best as well.”

  • On Steve Spagnuolo: “You see it when we play. Everything looks so similar, but he has so many different things that he can do. You can never get a feel for what he’s going to call… It’s hard to prepare for. It’s hard to go up against… [Facing him in training camp] prepares me for the season.”

  • On playing at home: “Arrowhead is just a special place… You feel the passion that the fans have.”

  • On his interceptions against the Bills last time: “In that game, I felt like the early interception hurt the team… The last one [later in the 4th quarter], I’m going to go down fighting… I just go out there and play, I don’t worry about that stuff. I just try to put our team in the best position to succeed.”

  • On scrambling in the postseason: “In the regular season… you’re trying to protect yourself. In the playoffs, you might take a few more chances to try to get a first down.”

  • On people believing he gets questionable calls: “I don’t feel that way… The referees are doing their best to call the game as fair as they can.”

  • On Travis Kelce: “I’ve always known how great of a leader he is. The way he works every single day, it makes my job easier as another leader on the team. I knew he was going to do what he did in the playoffs. Every time the moment gets bigger, he gets better. That’s the kind of guy you want on your team, and I’m glad he’s on mine…. I just appreciate every time I’m on the football field with him… Hopefully, that’s a lot more years.”

DeAndre Hopkins, Nick Bolton, Kareem Hunt, Isiah Pacheco, and Justin Reid also spoke to the media.

Coach Reid Wins Award

Andy Reid was selected as the AFC Coach of the Year by the 101 Awards.

This is Coach Reid's fourth Coach of the Year award from the 101 Awards.

However, Coach Reid has only been named the AP Coach of the Year one time, in 2002 when he was coaching the Eagles.

With the win over the Texans last weekend, Coach Reid earned his 300th win as a head coach (regular and postseason combined).

Reid now ranks fourth all-time in wins behind George Halas (324 wins), Bill Belichick (333), and Don Shula (347).

About the 101 Awards:

“In 1969, the final season of the AFL before its merger with the NFL, Lamar Hunt and Jack Wheeler led a group of Kansas City businessmen to create the 101 Awards. It was the first awards show of its kind, recognizing elite coaches in the AFL and NFL (and later the AFC and NFC) and commemorating some of the greatest players in football history.

Today, the 101 Awards are uniquely positioned as a truly national award, including voter representation from every local market in the league. The voting structure includes 64 voters from local media markets (two voters who cover each of the NFL’s 32 teams) and 37 national media members. Together, they make up the Committee of 101.”

Poll Results

Yesterday we asked our readers…

Which of the keys below is the most critical for the Chiefs to beat the Bills?

🟨🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️ Protecting Mahomes (38)

🟨🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️ Not turning the ball over (33)

⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ Establishing the run game (5)

⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ Connecting on deep passes (4)

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Containing Josh Allen (46)

🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ Limiting the Bills explosive plays (8)

⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ Forcing turnovers (3)

Luke’s Take

This is a tough question. In reality, a combination of the three highest answers would almost certainly result in a Chiefs victory, but if I have to choose one, I’m choosing “not turning the ball over.”

Turnovers give the other team extra possessions, often in dangerous field positions. If history is any indicator of how this game will go, it’s going to be close, so protecting the football will be critical.

The Chiefs just set the NFL record by playing their eighth consecutive game without a turnover. If the Chiefs can make it nine consecutive games without a turnover against the Bills on Sunday, I expect them to win.
