Super Bowl Recap

Game Recap

Section Note: That game was painful to watch. We’ll depart from our typical recap and highlight only some of the key moments.

1st Half

  • The Chiefs punted on their first three drives. Then, Mahomes threw a pick-six on their fourth possession, putting the Chiefs in a 17-0 hole midway through the 2nd quarter

  • The Eagles intercepted Mahomes at the KC 14-yard line with 1:49 left in the half, then punched in another TD

  • The Chiefs failed to score before the half when DeAndre Hopkins dropped a wide-open pass that likely would have led to points

  • Halftime Score: Eagles 24, Chiefs 0

2nd Half

  • The Chiefs failed to get anything going on their first two drives of the half and the Eagles took a 34-0 lead after a 46-yard TD pass with 2:40 left in the 3rd quarter

  • The Chiefs finally got on the board with a 24-yard TD pass to Xavier Worthy

  • The Eagles added another field goal, then Mahomes was strip-sacked on the next drive and the Eagles added another field goal to go up 40-14

  • Mahomes drove the offense down the field and connected with DeAndre Hopkins for a 7-yard TD pass, then found Justin Watson on the 2-point conversion

  • The Eagles turned the ball over on downs with their backup QB in the game, then Mahomes threw a 50-yard TD pass to Xavier Worthy

  • The Eagles recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock

  • Final Score: Eagles 40, Chiefs 22

Game Notes

  • The Eagles blitzed 0 times on 42 dropbacks, had 6 sacks, forced three turnovers

  • The Chiefs gave up 24 points in the first half, 14 off turnovers, and only gained 23 yards on offense

  • Patrick Mahomes had his worst dropback success rate in the first half of any game in his career

  • Eagles QB Jalen Hurts won Super Bowl MVP, accounting for 293 yards of total offense and 3 TDs

  • The Chiefs are now 3-2 in Super Bowls with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and 4-3 in franchise history

Quick Analysis

#1: Dominated in the Trenches

The Chiefs’ offensive line was dominated by the Eagles’ defensive line.

The Eagles blitzed ZERO times in the game and still wreaked havoc on the Chiefs’ offense. The offensive line has to get better.

On the other side, the Chiefs defense didn’t get enough pressure on Hurts without blitzing. They slowed down the run, but Hurts had time to throw for the most part and hurt the defense with his legs.

#2: Too Many Mistakes

Mahomes had uncharacteristic mistakes. The wide receivers had uncharacteristic drops. The defense had uncharacteristic penalties.

On the biggest stage, this team didn’t bring their best.

#3: The Eagles (and Hurts) Deserve Credit

The Eagles dominated the Chiefs and they deserve credit.

The Eagles defense forced three turnovers, which led to 17 points. The Chiefs lost by 18.

The Chiefs held Saquon Barkley to 57 yards on 25 carries, but the Eagles still gained 345 yards on offense and put up 40 points.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts deserves credit for the way he threw the ball and his effective running.

From the Podium

Andy Reid

  • On the game: “Today was a tough day — in all phases. We didn’t coach good enough… We’ll learn from this. You learn from it as a coach, you learn from it as a player, and you move on.”

Patrick Mahomes

  • On the game: “Credit to the Eagles. They played better than us from start to finish. Obviously, the turnovers hurt. I take all the blame for that… That was 14 points I kind of gave them. It’s hard to come back from that… I didn’t play to my standard, and I have to be better than that next time.”

  • On the emotion after the game: “It’s going to hurt for a while, but how can you respond from it?”

  • On his season: “There’s things I gotta get better at, and it showed up today.”

  • On his second SB loss: "They both sucked. These will be the two losses that motivate me the rest of my career."

  • On Travis Kelce: “I'll let Travis make that decision on his own, man. He's given so much to this team and to the NFL and been such a joy, not only for me to work with but for people to watch. He knows he still has a lot of football left in him. You can see it… He's done enough to be a gold jacket guy and a first-ballot Hall of Famer… He'll get to spend some time with his family and make that decision on his own."

  • On his play: I take ownership in this loss more than any loss in my career. I put us in a bad spot.”

Stats

  • QB Mahomes: 21/32, 257 YDS, 3 TD, 2 INT, 4 CAR, 25 YDS, 1 FUM

  • RB Hunt: 3 CAR, 9 YDS

  • RB Pacheco: 3 CAR, 7 YDS

  • WR Worthy: 8 REC, 157 YDS, 2 TD

  • TE Kelce: 4 REC, 39 YDS
