3 Things to Watch For
#1: Left Tackle (again)
D.J. Humphries' status for Sunday is uncertain. The left tackle position has been a huge issue for this offense and on Sunday they’ll be up against arguably the best defensive lineman in the NFL, Myles Garrett.
This game will be closer than it should be if the Chiefs left tackle, whoever it ends up being, struggles as much as they have the past few weeks.
#2: Turnover Time
The secondary has struggled of late, and the pass rush has been lackluster.
As a result, the Chiefs have a -4 turnover differential and only have 6 interceptions and 4 fumble recoveries on the season.
DC Steve Spagnuolo mentioned that they haven’t forced as many turnovers as they’d like to. Luckily for the Chiefs, they’re going up against a quarterback this week, Jameis Winston, who is notorious for turning the ball over.
#3: 3rd Down Magic
Despite their flaws on the offensive line, the Chiefs have been elite on 3rd down this season.
The Chiefs are #1 in the NFL on 3rd down, converting 51.96% of their opportunities. The next closest team is the Bucs at 47.17%.
Mahomes deserves much of the credit for the 3rd down success. His ability to evade pressure and make a play when the play is breaking down is what often leads to key conversions.
From the Podium
Dave Toub
On Harrison Butker: “I think he looks pretty good. We’ll see [if he plays].”
On Justin Reid kicking off: “We felt like he could get the ball down to the goal line, and you can cover with Justin too.”
On Nikko Remigio returning: “He did a really good job… Good square catches, good decisions... He practices hard… He was prepared mentally for this.”
On P Matt Araiza: “Matt Araiza had a great game [against the Chargers].”
Steve Spagnuolo
On Steven Nelson: “[We’ll] just take it one day at a time and see what we’ve got.”
On the defensive backs: “[The personnel] won’t be much different than it was this last week.”
On coverage: “What we do here is just keep chasing improvement… We hope our guys get better at what we’re doing. It’s the explosive passes that get us.”
On the pass rush: “We’re hoping every game that the pass rush is intense and violent.”
On turnovers: “We haven’t had as many [turnovers] as we would like. What we’re hoping for is that we’re saving them all up.”
On Jaden Hicks: “I like what he’s doing… I think he’s been a pretty good cover guy.”
Matt Nagy
On Mahomes facing pressure: “He just goes about his business. It’s our job as coaches to make sure we’re putting our guys in the best position schematically… Pat’s been phenomenal. He doesn’t worry about that stuff, he just focuses on what he can control.”
On Mahomes in big moments: “You feel good about it because he has a history of doing it in a career in big moments… We want to feel good when we put in a play… Then whatever we do, we’ve got to react… That’s Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes making a big play in a big moment… We feel good that Pat’s going to make a good decision.”
Chris Jones
On the Browns: “Jameis Winston is a heck of a QB. He can make all of the throws… It’s a competitive Browns team.”
On Myles Garrett: “Myles is amazing… I have a lot of respect for his game… I hope he has no success against us.”
On playing 3 games in 11 days: “Would have loved a late bye week… But we’ve got everything ahead of us. Coach Reid is doing a great job of changing up the schedule for us and letting us get a little extra rest.”
