Recap & Highlights
1st Half
The Bengals moved the ball down the Chiefs 6 after a big 4th down conversion, but the defense held them to a FG
The Chiefs drove the ball down with ease, primarily on the back of Pacheco, but settled for a FG from the 1-yard line
After forcing a punt, Mahomes threw an interception that led to a Bengals TD drive to put them up 10-3
Mahomes connected with Rashee Rice for a 44-yard TD on the next drive to tie the game at 10
The Bengals moved the ball easily on the next drive, but Jones and Karlaftis combined for a sack to hold them to a FG
The Chiefs took over with just over four minutes left in the half and Carson Steele fumbled near mid-field
The Bengals took advantage of another turnover and extended the lead to 6 with another FG
2nd Half
The Chiefs opened the half with a huge 13-play, 70-yard TD drive that was kept alive by a Carson Steele 5-yard run on 4th and 1, then capped off with a 1-yard TD pass to LT Wanya Morris
The Bengals responded with their own 70-yard TD drive but missed the PAT to take a 22-17 lead
Mahomes threw his second INT on the next drive when Bengals CB Cam Taylor-Britt made an unbelievable one-handed catch
The Chiefs defense made the play of the game when Tershawn Wharton and Mike Danna combined for a strip-sack, and Chamarri Conner returned the fumble for a TD to take a 23-22 lead after the Chiefs 2-pt attempt failed
The Bengals responded with a 53-yard FG but could have had more on the drive if WR Ja’Marr Chase had not been called for a costly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that put them in a 3rd and 22 (Chase refused to talk about it after the game)
The Chiefs went 3-and-out after another holding penalty was called on LT Kingsley Suamataia that put them in a 3rd and 20 situation
On 3rd and 6 with 3:27 left in the game, Chamarri Conner sacked Joe Burrow and forced a punt
The Chiefs converted a 4th and 6 from their own 45 that was called back on a Wanya Morris penalty, then on 4th and 16, the Bengals committed pass interference against Rashee Rice at their own 35, setting up a 51-yard game-winning FG from Harrison Butker

Quick Analysis
#1: Turnovers and Penalties Will Kill You (and Save You)
The Chiefs turned the ball over three times, and the Bengals scored 10 points off those turnovers. On top of that, the Chiefs had 4 penalties for 44 yards, and two of those killed important drives.
It’s rare that a team even has the opportunity to win a game when they turn the ball over three times and lose the turnover battle by two.
Luckily, a turnover that led to a TD and a defensive penalty by the Bengals is what gave the Chiefs a chance to win the game.
The Chiefs won’t be able to get away with three turnovers in future games.
#2: Kingsley Got Worked
Rookie LT Kingsley Suamataia had his welcome to the NFL game.
Bengals DE Trey Hendrickson dominated the rookie so badly that Coach Reid had to pull him in the 4th quarter and put in second-year LT Wanya Morris.
Reid and Mahomes were positive about Kingsley after the game and talked about how he will learn and get better from it. Suamataia has already shown promising potential, but his performance today wasn’t good enough.
#3: TEs are a Problem for the Defense
A theme is beginning to emerge with this Chiefs defense: they struggle to cover tight ends.
Last week, Ravens TE Isaiah Likely had over 100 receiving yards against the Chiefs. This week, the Bengals’ three tight ends combined for 14 catches and 151 yards. The Chiefs linebackers are being exposed in coverage, and it could be a problem down the road.
#4: McDuffie > Chase
Trent McDuffie dominated Ja’Marr Chase. Proof 👇
Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie aligned across Ja’Marr Chase on 17 of 38 routes (45%), including four routes in press coverage. McDuffie allowed just 1 reception for 4 yards on 2 targets as the nearest defender against Chase.

#5: Great Teams Find a Way to Win
The Chiefs are 2-0 and have already beaten two of their biggest threats in the AFC.
The win over the Bengals wasn’t pretty, but championship teams find a way to win.
From the Podium
Andy Reid
Injuries: Pacheco sustained an ankle injury and had an X-ray and tests after the game. Pacheco was spotted leaving the stadium in a walking boot and on crutches.
On Harrison Butker: “Can’t say enough about Butker and how reliable he is. He’s a great kicker and even better person.”
On turnovers: “They kill you… If you come out with a win with three turnovers, that’s a plus.”
On Kingsley Suamataia: “Kingsley was going up against arguably one of the best defensive ends in the NFL, and it’ll be a good experience for him to learn from. I took him out of the game because sometimes you’ve got to take a step back… It’s a great learning experience.”
On Carson Steele: “He’s another young guy. You’ve got to keep that ball against your body in this league… It’s something he can learn from. He came back and he ran hard for us.”
On Chamarri Connor: “He had a heck of a game. He was all over the place.”
On starting Kingsley next week: “We’ll see. I’ll look at the tape, talk to Coach Heck, and we’ll go from there.”
Patrick Mahomes
Characterizing the win: “I thought we did a lot of good things, but the three turnovers just can’t happen… We played not as clean as we wanted to and still found a way to win. Obviously, we’ve got to clean up a lot of things on offense as we go forward.”
On the 4th and 16 play: “I haven’t seen the replay, but it felt like the dude was there pretty early. You’ve got to give your guys chances and that’s what we did.”
On Trey Hendrickson: “He’s just an absolute monster, man. His motor, the way he’s able to rush the passer… He did a great job today, man… Kind of an underrated guy.”
His message to Suamataia: “Just keep playing man. You’re not always going to have a perfect day… I have all the trust in the world that he’s going to keep getting better and better and be a guy I can count on every game.”
On Travis Kelce: “I mean they’re doing a great job pretty much having two guys on him all the time… As the season goes on, he’s going to get his catches, he’s going to get his yards.”
On Butker’s kick: “I’m nervous, but I’m not nervous. I’m nervous because it’s out of my hands… I just know I need to cross the 50, and Harrison is going to go out there and knock it through.”
Harrison Butker
On staying calm with game-winning kicks: “During practice, I try to put a ton of pressure on myself… When I get to a game-winning moment, nothing different should happen. When you are driving down the field for a game-winning kick, my focus is going to be more dialed in on the way down the field.”
