From the Podium

Andy Reid

  • On going for 4th and 1 in their own territory: “That’s a trust thing. You have to have trust in your guys.”

  • On Steve Spagnuolo: “I have the utmost respect for him, and I know he’d be a great head coach. I don’t want to lose him selfishly.”

  • On the three-peat: “We’re motivated like crazy to win the game, you get caught up in that other stuff and that hype that goes with it, then you forget about [the details]… It’s going to come down to a football game.”

Clark Hunt

  • Opening comments: “So much work goes into an evening like this… It’s hard to even put into words what it’s like to have the opportunity we will here in a couple weeks in New Orleans.”

  • On what this means for Kansas City: “It’s been transformational. You think back to 2013 when Andy joined the organization. He made us an immediate winner and really changed the organization. Then a few years later, he got the QB he’d always dreamed of.”

  • On Reid as the greatest coach ever: “He certainly has to be in that conversation… I think the great news for Chiefs fans is he’s not done… I know he’s excited about the challenge of coming back next year.”

  • On his expectations when they hired Reid: “Our goal has always been to build a consistent winner. Our dream was to win one Lamar Hunt trophy and our second Lombardi trophy… But the great news is, none of us were satisfied with that.”

Brett Veach

  • On Mahomes: “His awareness as a player, and he knows situations… You had to steal possessions and you had to score points against these guys… We got the stops when we needed.”

  • On the in-season moves: “We’re always aggressive. It goes back to the leadership of Clark. I’m super aggressive and that could be dangerous, so having Clark’s leadership is a blessing… He gives me the green light when he feels like it’s appropriate… It’s that delicate balance of being disciplined and being aggressive.”

  • On Kareem Hunt: “I’m so excited [for him]. Obviously, it was a tough situation years ago. He’s grown and learned, and he’s so grateful to be here, and we’re so grateful to have him… It’s always special to come full circle.”

Patrick Mahomes

  • On his rushing: “They always give me options to pull the ball and run it, and they were playing man coverage a lot of the day. They were putting a lot of attention on Travis.”

  • On the final possession: “A ton of trust by Coach Reid to give me the football and let me have a chance to throw the ball… It comes from a lot of experience in those moments.”

  • On getting to another Super Bowl: “It’s just so hard to get to the Super Bowl, and I don’t take it for granted… Being able to win it at Arrowhead… It’s a special place, and I’m glad I get to be a part of Chiefs Kingdom… It’s a long process, and it takes everybody on the team.”

  • On going for a three-peat: “I put every single season as its own season. Every team is different… I just go about my business… You just treat it as one season and one Super Bowl run.”

  • On the fumble: “I was trying to pull it to either run or pull the ball. Obviously, I did it a little too late… You just move on and kind of keep pushing forward… It was a long football game left.”

  • On winning close games: “It’s because it’s everybody. It’s not just one side of the football… We’ve done it so many different ways now that we just have full trust [in each other].”

  • On the 4th and 5 stop: “You’re obviously nervous. I’m always nervous when the football is not in my hand. But I trust in our defense.”

  • On 17 postseason wins: “It’s obviously really cool… I know I’m a long way from Tom, so I’ll do what I can to get close to that.”

  • On preparing for the Eagles: “I’ll have a good night tonight. After that, we’ll be right on to focusing on the Eagles… It’ll take our best football to win.”
