Kansas Passes STAR Bond Bill

Last Friday, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed the STAR Bond Bill into law.

The bill allows STAR Bonds to finance up to 70% of the cost of building stadiums for up to two professional sports teams in the state of Kansas.

You can read an in-depth breakdown of the bill and why it matters for the Chiefs in this newsletter.

Poll Results

Last week we asked the readers…

How would you feel if the Chiefs moved to Kansas?

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Love it (46)

🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ Dislike it a lot (16)

🟨🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️ Hate it (37)

⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ Other (comment answer) (3)

Unsurprisingly, readers had some strong opinions on the issue…

Hate it: “It would be a true shame to lose both of these teams to Kansas. Both teams do so much for KC and both teams do so much as individuals for our city.”

Hate it: “They will not be the Kansas City Chiefs to me if they go to Kansas.”

Other: “Neither New York football teams play in New York (the state or city.) Dallas' football team does not play in Dallas. Boston's football team has been named after a region rather than a city for decades. It's not a big deal if the teams choose to fleece another town or state out of billions for a new stadium - and I love and support both the football and baseball team that have KC on their hats, jerseys, logos, and merchandise.”

Neutral: “Whatever it takes that they stay in “KC” and get a stadium with a cover. I’d be interested in going to more games if I didn’t freeze to death for every game past Nov. 1 of the season. To me that just isn’t fun. Stinks Missouri voters couldn’t make it happen but again, as long they can still be called KC Chiefs instead of the Memphis Chiefs or San Antonio Chiefs…”

Love it: “New covered stadium for the Chiefs means a Super Bowl! yea!”

Love it: “Building the Chiefs Stadium at the Legends would be a definite success. The area supports entertaining, lodging, shopping and a variety of restaurants. And they could have a dome so we could host a Super Bowl.”

Luke’s Take:

While I understand the passionate responses on both sides, the most important thing to me is that the Chiefs remain in the KC metro.

At the end of the day, Clark Hunt owns a business, and he is going to try to find the best financial deal for his team, and I can’t blame him for it.

If moving the team to Kansas saves Hunt hundreds of millions of dollars in construction costs, I couldn't blame him for taking that deal, and it’s hard to imagine anyone in his position would do differently (emotions and state loyalty set aside of course).

I would rather have the Chiefs move across the state line than have cities across the country bidding to lure them to another region.

Training Camp

The Chiefs will return to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri for training camp for the 14th consecutive year.

Open practices begin on Sunday, July 21st, and conclude on Thursday, August 15th.

Practices are free of charge and open to the public, except for seven dates. All attendees must have a digital ticket, even on the free days.

Ticket reservations are now open.

Missouri Western will charge $5 for parking per vehicle per day except for the two exclusive Season Ticket Member days when parking is free.

Parking must be purchased before arrival and is mobile entry only.
