Bills Game Quick Analysis

#1: Mahomes is Inevitable

We could list a dozen stats here about how great Mahomes is, but you’ve likely heard most of them at this point.

The simple fact is this: Mahomes is his best when the stakes are the highest.

He again found a way to do enough to will his team to another victory. Bet against Mahomes at your own peril.

#2: Joe Thuney Impresses

Joe Thuney gave up zero pressures playing LT and had an 89.3 PFF pass-blocking grade, the highest grade for any offensive lineman in a Conference Championship game.

The Chiefs all-pro LG played like an all-pro LT against the Bills, and the Chiefs will need him to do the same things against a tough Eagles defensive line in the Super Bowl.

#3: Spags & Co. Come Up Big (again)

The Chiefs stopped the Bills on QB sneaks three times, the most stops against a QB in a game since 2017. The defense also stopped two two-point conversions.

With the game on the line in the 4th quarter, the defense came up big when it mattered most. They put the Bills in a 4th and 5, then Spagnuolo dialed up a blitz that confused Josh Allen and led to an incompletion.

Every season, the defense under Steve Spagnuolo seems to peak at the right time.

Making History

It cannot be understated how incredible the current Chiefs run is.

The list of achievements below is unprecedented:

  • The Chiefs are appearing in their 5th Super Bowl in the last 6 season, the first team ever to do so

  • The Chiefs are the first team in the Super Bowl era to appear in a 3rd straight Super Bowl with an opportunity to three-peat

  • The Chiefs are alone at 3rd in the NFL with 7 Super Bowl appearances, trailing four teams (PIT, DAL, DEN, SF), each tied at 8, and the Patriots at 11

  • With a Super Bowl victory, the Chiefs would tie the 49ers and Cowboys with 5 championships, trailing the Patriots and Steelers with 6

  • As a starter, Mahomes’ worst finish to a season is two overtime losses in the AFC Championship

  • Patrick Mahomes is second all-time in playoff wins (17) behind only Tom Brady (35)

  • Mahomes is second all-time with 7 game-winning drives in the postseason

  • Andy Reid is second all-time in playoff wins (28) for coaches behind Bill Belichick (31)

From the Podium

Andy Reid

  • Opening comments: “We understand that we’ve got a big challenge ahead of us coming up with the Eagles.” Reid praised the teamwork from the top down within the organization, which has led to the team’s success. “It takes everybody to get to this point.”

  • On short yardage conversions: “Some of them we’ve worked on before. You always add a little wrinkle to them here or there as you go… We’ve experimented with those all the way back to the offseason.”

  • On the 3rd and 9 pass to Perine: “We go through and we look at this before the game. If it comes down to a 3rd down and 4th down and the games on the line, we talk to the QBs about it, we talk to the coaches about it… That was kind of our go-to option for this game. We were just hoping they were in the right coverage for us and they were… Matt [Nagy] spends endless time going through that with all the guys.”

  • On the team’s mindset: “I think all the guys want to do well… Guys don’t want to be embarrassed out there. As coaches, it’s our responsibility to teach them to put them in the best position they can to be successful… Brett Veach does a great job of bringing in guys with that “want to” attitude.”

  • On his enjoyment in the journey: “Yeah, I like to teach. I think if you’re going to be a coach, you’ve got to be a teacher first. There’s a lot that goes into that. It’s not just knowing your stuff. It’s how it’s presented and the trust that you have in the guys. Then the work that goes into each play… But when we see success, we enjoy that… I know the time and the effort that went into that.”

  • On Xavier Worthy’s performance: “The kid, every week, has just gotten better and better and better. He’s really put together a nice [second] half of the season here.”

  • On Mahomes in the 4th quarter: “Phenomenal player, had a phenomenal night last night. There’s no change in him as you go. He comes in competitive, [and] he’s going to finish competitive right down to the end. The pressure part of it, when things can dilate you a bit, don’t do that to him. He kind of flourishes in those moments when they’re the toughest. He’s just wired that way. I’m sure growing up in a locker room with his dad was a big part of it… Some of it is just innate. He’s one of those guys. The tighter the situation, the looser he plays.”

  • On their dominance in close games: “I think the guys kind of thrive [on pressure]... When given an opportunity, they’ve stepped up in those situations… As a coach, you love that part and you know that’s a rare thing… Guys take so much pride in stepping up. They don’t shrink in those situations.”

  • On the Eagles: “They’ve got good TEs and good receivers, and a running back that’s arguably one of the best in the history of the league… and their QB is dialing it up right now… That’s a heck of an offense and another huge challenge for us.”

  • On the trust he has in Spagnuolo: “All these coaches… they’re all in with Spags. Spags has confidence in them, and the players have confidence in their coaches and Spags, and they want to learn the system. That’s a tough system… I’ve got enough confidence in him to know he’s going to make the right call at the right time.”

  • On his prep for the Eagles: “I try to get back on it… As coaches, we’ve got to dig in and get going and make sure we can feed the players a good gameplan… Most of that work takes place this week. Once you get down to New Orleans, it’s a bit chaotic, so you want to make sure you take care of that work now.”

  • On the offense scoring 32 points: “It was a good day to get over 30… There was no better time than against that team… I think we’re at that point where guys are back healthy and have been able to practice fast with Pat, then you cut it loose a little bit.”

  • On bringing Kareem Hunt back: “He called me… I knew he had changed, I spent some time with him at Pat’s wedding… He’s got a good heart… I had confidence that he could jump in and help us… I knew he wanted to redeem himself amongst the community [and show] that people can change, and “I changed” is what he is saying.

Luke’s Take

Patrick. Mahomes.

He was unbelievably efficient in this game. In the biggest moments, he elevates his play and takes over the game. Without Mahomes, none of this is possible.
