AFC Championship Preview: Bills @ Chiefs, 3 Things to Watch For
We bring you the latest from the Chiefs and around the NFL
Good Morning Chiefs Kingdom,
Coach Reid was named a finalist for the AP Coach of the Year award. Despite being the fourth-winningest coach in NFL history, Reid has only won the award once in 2002.
Congratulations to Coach Reid on being a finalist!
Today we bring you a preview of the Chiefs’ 7th consecutive AFC Championship game, this time hosting the Buffalo Bills.
Go Chiefs!
— Luke Gromer

3 Things to Watch
#1: Turnover Battle
As cliche as it is to say, the winner of this game will likely be the team that wins the turnover battle.
The Chiefs just played their seventh consecutive game without committing a turnover, setting an NFL record. For the season, they were 10th in the NFL with a +6 turnover margin.
The Bills were first in the league during the regular season with a +24 turnover margin. They protected the ball and got takeaways at a high rate all season long.
Keep an eye on which defense makes game-changing plays and whether an offense makes costly mistakes.
#2: The Secondary
The last time these teams faced off, the Chiefs were missing their #2 CB Jaylen Watson.
The Chiefs’ corners, particularly Nazeeh Johnson, were burned badly by the Bills wide receivers in that game.
If the defensive backs can lock down the Bills’ receivers, the line will have more opportunities to put Allen under pressure and, hopefully, force some critical mistakes.
Keep an eye on how the secondary holds up against the Bills’ receivers in this game.
#3: The Front 7
It’s no secret how dangerous Josh Allen is with his arm and his legs.
In the last matchup, Allen had a game-sealing 23-yard TD scramble.
For the Chiefs to slow down the Bills, the front 7 (defensive linemen and linebackers) must be disciplined in their responsibilities to keep Allen in the pocket and avoid giving him open rushing lanes.
Keep an eye on how the defensive line contains Allen in the pocket and how the linebackers do “spying” on Allen.

From the Podium
Andy Reid
On the game: “We’re fortunate to be here, although, a lot of hard work has gone into it from our guys to be here.”
On the Bills: “They’ve got two good running backs and a QB that can run… I’m sure they’re going to continue to utilize that.”
On the Bills defense: “They’re one of the best in the league [at forcing turnovers]… They do a good job of stripping the ball and or intercepting the ball… and they’ve got a good scheme.”
On pressuring Josh Allen: “He’s tough to get down… You’ve got to stay disciplined and stay in your lanes.”
Patrick Mahomes
On staying sharp on the sideline: “For me, it’s just stay calm and keep yourself warm.”
On scrambling: “You play to win. There will be opportunities to run the football. They do a good job of saying the QB… It’s the AFC Championship game, you’ve got to put it all on the line in order to win and make it to the Super Bowl.”
On winning the turnover battle: “That’s super important for us… It’s extremely important in the playoffs and especially when you go up against some of the best teams.”
A message for Chiefs Kingdom: “Chiefs Kingdom is always passionate and always loud, but I’d say let’s take it up a notch. Let’s see how loud this place can get! I always appreciate the support and the love they show for us, so I’m excited to have another AFC Championship at Arrowhead.”
Others
Dave Toub on getting FG blocks: “[Justin Reid] studies a lot of tape. He’s the main reason we get these blocks. He has such a great get-off on the edge that it opens up space for other guys.”
Steve Spagnuolo on calling blitzes: “Probably a little bit more of a feel than anything else. I know the guys do like that part of it… Every DB and LB will tell you they want to blitz… The things that go into it are how have they protected prior to that, the different looks we gave them before, and how did they react… I’m always talking to the guys upstairs… And I’m usually trying to give the guys a heads up on the sideline.”
Steve Spagnuolo on Josh Allen: “[Josh Allen] is a premiere threat in this league, not just with his arm but with his legs… Now I know how other defenses feel when they go against Patrick.”
Steve Spagnuolo on containing Allen: “The best thing that can happen for us is that all 11 function as 11. They need to function as one because Allen finds one little seam [and he’s gone].”
Matt Nagy on Von Miller: “He’s a hell of a player and his motor is going all the time… We know who he is. These are the kind of games, where you want to prevent those kinds of players from making game-changing plays.”
Chris Jones on the Bills run game: “We’ve definitely got to be able to stop the run if we want any type of chance of competing in this game.”
Joe Thuney on playing LT: “[It’s a] different position, but I’m just taking it a day at a time and trying to do the best I can and prepare the best I can.”
