Patrick Mahomes Restructures
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs restructured his contract for the next four seasons yesterday.
Hereās what we know about itā¦
$210.6m guaranteed over the next for year
$52.6m average annual value over the next four years
The most guaranteed money of any player over the next four years
$2.5m of cap space was created for this season with the restructure
The money was moved from the back end of Mahomes contract to the front end
No additional years or new money was added to the contract
More on it from an article by Adam Teicher of ESPN:
The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes have restructured his agreement, giving him $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026, the most money in NFL history over a four-season span. His compensation for those years is now guaranteed, the quarterback's agent told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.
The Chiefs and Mahomes plan to revisit the agreement again after the 2026 season, Equity Sports CEO Chris Cabott, who negotiated the deal on behalf of Mahomes, told Schefter.
Mahomes became the NFL's highest-paid player in the summer of 2020 when he signed a 10-year extension worth $450 million. No player has since topped that contract in terms of total value, but several quarterbacks have passed Mahomes in average annual pay, including four this year -- Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert and Joe Burrowā¦
[Mahomes] will average $52.6 million over the next four seasons with his restructuring, putting him more in line with the recent quarterback dealsā¦
More on it from an article by Albert Breer of SI:
Whatās different about this quarterback deal is it adds no new years and no new money, but pushes all kinds of cash forward to recognize where the market has gone in the three years since the sides did their 2020 deal. Mahomes will now make $208.1 million between 2023 and ā26, the most money over a four-year span in NFL history.
Since Mahomes signed his 10-year extension, he fell from first to eighth in the average-per-year (APY) metric. And a contract that was built to recognize a rising financial tide became outdated quicklyāit was set to tick up from $40 million per year to $50 million per year in 2026. But in ā23, we already have four quarterbacks past that benchmark and now Mahomes.
- Joe Burrow, Bengals: Five years, $275 million ($55M APY)
- Mahomes, Chiefs: Four years, $210.6 million ($52.65M APY)
- Justin Herbert, Chargers, Five years, $262.5 million ($52.5M APY)
- Lamar Jackson, Ravens, Five years, $260 million ($52M APY)
- Jalen Hurts, Eagles: Five years, $255 million ($51M APY)

Big Red Speaks
Coach Reid spoke to the media yesterday.
No injuries to report
The offense has to eliminate mistakes. They had 12 penalties and 3 turnovers against Jacksonville.
Jawaan Taylor āis a good football playerā¦ Heās got to back up and start over on this. Heās plenty quick.ā There were lots of eyes on his on Sunday.
The defense is playing really well. The coaches have done a great job and āthe guys have an energy and a confidence that wasnāt there last yearā¦ It was also good to get Chris back in there. Heās a disruptive guy.ā
On the offense: āI have a pretty good feel on what we have, but I donāt like what weāre doing. Iām not big on turnovers, and Iām not big on penalties. And weāve got too many of them right now.ā
On Travis Kelce: āTravis was fighting Travis. He was getting butched as we call itā¦ where they try to bang you up one way or anotherā¦ Iām sure his leg probably didnāt feel 100%.ā
