OTAs

Yesterday, the Chiefs wrapped up their first of three voluntary OTAs (organized team activities). The Chiefs practiced Monday through Wednesday of this week.

Although the practices do not feature live contact, 7-on-7, 9-on-9, and 11-on-11 drills are allowed. For rookies, this is a much closer version of an NFL practice than their rookie minicamp.

The Chiefs will hold their second OTAs May 28-30 (Tu-Th), and their third June 4-7 (Tu-Fri) for a total of 10 days of voluntary OTAs.

After OTAs conclude, the Chiefs will host their three-day mandatory minicamp on June 11-13.

From the Podium

Coach Reid and Patrick Mahomes spoke to the media yesterday.

Andy Reid

  • On Rashee Rice: “We keep open communication there, and we just let the process play out there.”

  • On Harrison Butker: “We’re a microcosm of life here. Everybody from different areas, different religions, different races. We all get along, we all respect each other’s opinions… We respect everybody to have a voice. It’s the great thing about America man… My wish is that everybody could kind of follow that… I don’t think he was speaking ill of women… He has his opinions, and we all respect that. I let you guys in this room and you have a lot of opinions I don’t like.”

  • On playing three games in 11 days: “It’s unique. You know how we are, we don’t really care. They could give us a Tuesday game if they want… We’ll play anybody, anywhere…”

  • On new players: “I like what I’ve seen from the new guys… Hollywood does a nice job out there as a receiver… Carson [Wentz] looks sharp, he’s picking things up fast...”

  • On Xavier Worthy: “He didn’t practice today. He tweaked his hamstring the other day. What we saw was somebody that was smart… and somebody that can run pretty fast…”

  • On Mahomes’ leadership: “To have a player that voices stuff… that’s so important I think that first of all, they’re bought into what we’re doing, and they’re willing to share it with the other guys…”

Patrick Mahomes

  • On the offense: “Like y’all saw today, we tried to throw some more deep passes… Coach is really pushing us to push it down the field…”

  • On Rashee Rice: “I think it’s not just me, [we’re] just trying to do whatever we can to teach him how to learn from his mistakes… You’ve got to learn from it and make sure it doesn’t happen again… Right now we’re just going to keep trying to do whatever we can so he can be a great football player obviously, but we want him to be a great person too.”

  • On Butker’s comments: “I’ve known Harrison for 7 years. I judge him by the character he shows every day. That’s a good person. That’s someone [who] cares about the people around him, cares about his family, and wants to make a good impact on society…. We’re not always going to agree, and there’s certain things he said that I don’t necessarily agree with… But at the same time, I’m going to judge him by the character he shows every day…”

  • On his message to the rookies: “Try to be great every day… They have to come in and learn how to work… We want to make sure that we push them to be great every single day…”

  • On the schedule: “I feel like our schedule has gotten crazier and crazier every single year… Now it’s about how can we find a way to be better than we were last year.”

  • If he has a game circled on the schedule: “I’m going to try to be better on Christmas… Last Christmas wasn’t great.”

Nick Bolton and Trent McDuffie also spoke to the media.

Photographer Drops Charges Against Rice

Chiefs WR Rashee Rice has been participating in the Chiefs OTAs this week.

Rice was responsible for a significant car accident in Dallas at the beginning of April, and the legal process is still playing out in that case.

Additionally, earlier in May, a report surfaced that a photographer was allegedly assaulted by Rice.

Earlier this week, Tom Pelissero reported that the photographer involved in the incident had requested that the charges against Rice be dropped.

Pelissero reported the following:

"Rashee Rice has other issues, obviously, that he's facing with the Kansas City Chiefs. He had the car crash in which he faces eight felony charges for his role there. There was also a recent accusation by a photographer about him assaulting the photographer on his way out of a club. I actually can tell you the photographer recently dropped those charges. He gave an affidavit to the Dallas Police Department saying it was a misunderstanding, [he] wants the charges dropped. You still have the things related to the auto incident that is going to have to play out here for Rashee Rice. Then on top of that, NFL discipline, but at least for now, back with the Chiefs."

A lot of people have made the assumption that since the photographer is requesting for the charges to be dropped, Rice and the photographer may have reached some sort of financial agreement.

However, Seth Keysor, an attorney, and the author of the Chief in the North newsletter offered the following legal perspective on this report:

“The alleged victim has reportedly submitted an affidavit to the Dallas police saying it was a 'misunderstanding' and asking that charges 'dropped.’

A few points of clarity from a prosecutor standpoint: First, the State makes charging decisions, not alleged victims. It's a common misnomer that alleged victims 'drop' charges. That's not their call. They ask that the State not charge or ask that charges be dismissed once filed, but the ultimate discretion is the State's.

It's unfortunately common in DV [domestic violence] cases (for example) that alleged victims will ask charges not be filed or be dismissed, and the State still proceeds. Again, that's just to clarify the procedural stance.

Odds are in a case like this the State won't proceed if the alleged victim is asking them not to and/or recanting his initial statement.

But there's an off-chance they do if they think they've got the evidence regardless of the alleged victim's request.

This is all just to clear up a common mistake that gets made about how criminal charging works.

All that said, it appears that this incident may turn out to not amount to much in the legal system. My guess is the NFL still looks into it given everything else.”

Even with the photographer requesting for the charges to be dropped, expect the NFL to still come down with a heavy hand on Rice for his involvement in the car accident in Dallas.
