Week 8 Preview

The Chiefs square off against the Broncos for the second time in 3 weeks.

The Chiefs will look to win their 17th straight game against the Broncos, which would put them in a tie for the 3rd longest win streak against a single opponent.

The forecast for Denver on Sunday is 29 degrees and a 75% chance of snow. When asked about it, Mahomes called himself “a snow game guy.”

Injury Updates

  • Nick Bolton had a successful surgery to repair his wrist and will miss at least 6 weeks

What to Watch For

Offense

  • The offense sputtered against the Broncos defense in the red zone in week 6. Can they build upon their strong offensive performance against the Chargers and convert their red zone opportunities on Sunday?

  • Travis Kelce had over 100 receiving yards in the first half in the previous matchup against the Broncos. Will the Broncos have a better plan to slow down the star tight end?

  • Rashee Rice continues to steadily improve week by week, but he’s yet to eclipse the 100-yard receiving mark in a game. When will he have a truly breakout game?

Defense

  • The defense has yet to give up more than 21 points in a single game and held the Broncos to just 8 points two weeks ago. Can they continue their dominance?

  • Charles Omenihu had an immediate impact in his return to action last week. Will he continue to make game-changing plays on the defensive line?

  • The secondary is quietly proving to be one of the best in the league. In the previous matchup against the Broncos, Russell Wilson only threw for 95 passing yards. Can they shut down Wilson again this week?

Opponent News

The Broncos (2-5) are coming off their second win of the season, beating the Packers 19-17 last week.

From the Podium

The coordinators and Trey Smith spoke to the media yesterday.

Dave Toub

  • Mecole Hardman was knocking some rust off last week as a punt returner. Toub emphasized that “he’s the guy” on punt returns.

  • Kadarius Toney is not returning punts because “Andy wants to keep him on the offensive side. He’s a specialty guy for him.”

  • Returning punts is a hard job. Great punt returners anticipate where the ball will be well.

  • Nick Bolton being injured means that Drue Tranquill won’t play special teams anymore and the Chiefs will need to elevate someone from the practice squad to help on special teams.

Steve Spagnuolo

  • The defense is very comfortable with Drue Tranquill stepping in during Bolton’s absence

  • On the D-line batting down passes: “Our guys have a real good knack for it… a lot of what we look at is where is a [quarterback] releasing the football.”

  • On the versatility of the defensive linemen: It’s beneficial to exploit matchups but it requires that all the guys know all the spots on the line.

  • The combination of the defensive line and the linebackers makes the defense dynamic. “We have a lot of guys with football ‘get it.’”

Matt Nagy

  • Mahomes and Kelce have a special connection that’s been built over time. They’re really good against man and zone defenses.

  • “The other wide receivers are growing… and that helps open up Kelce.”

  • Mahomes is a special talent and he makes throws that others can’t make.

  • “Just as rare as [Mahomes] is at [quarterback], Kelce is as rare at the tight end position.”

  • “I’ve seen [Mahomes] chuck that thing 80 yards recently… his arm’s not getting any weaker.”

Trey Smith

  • Playing the Broncos for the second time in 3 weeks is a challenge the Chiefs have to prepare for

  • On Travis Kelce: Smith praised Kelce’s ability to get open and his knowledge of the game.

  • What he’s thinking when he pulls on a run play: “Destroy what I see.”

  • “Cold weather is big guy weather… I’ve always preferred cold weather over hot weather.”

  • On his HS retiring his jersey: Smith highlighted that it was a special moment with some of the people who mean the most to him in his life.
